A recent national study confirmed what many already knew: free access to computers at the public library is a lifeline for patrons who do not have computer access at home. What may be surprising is the sheer volume of patrons who rely on this service. Nearly one-third of Americans aged 14 and older (about 77 million people) have used a public library computer or wifi network to access the Internet in the past year. The four main areas where library computer usage has made the most impact are: job searching and career needs, health issues, educational needs, and linking patrons to government and civic resources. CADL provides free computer usage and wifi access to its patrons, supporting this vital trend in our communities.
CADL is invaluable to the community it serves. Need proof? It’s all in the numbers. Last year the Capital Area District Library circulated over 2.7 million items to more than 77,000 registered patrons (a 7.5% increase over the previous year). Over 1.5 million visits were made to the library, and CADL patrons used 410,000 sessions on the library’s computers. Wireless Internet use increased by 292% over the previous year. Support the library that supports you, and make sure to vote YES for the operational millage on August 3.
Come meet Support CADL folks at Mac’s Bar June 20! The raucous Mitten Mavens have graciously allowed us a table at their upcoming benefit show at Mac’s Bar!
The Mitten Mavens are one of Greater Lansing’s new roller derby leagues. Come meet the Mavens and some librarians/library lovers, have a drink and catch some music. This is not a family-friendly event.

It is likely no great surprise to our supporters that libraries encourage literacy. But did you know that studies show parents reading to their children from birth through childhood significantly increases a child’s chances of school success? CADL provides parents with the resources to read to their children, and a fun, free space where literacy is the focus. The library’s collection includes many materials for parents about literacy and school success. Also, every CADL branch provides storytimes for parents and children, and several branches have Early Literacy Play Time programs to model early literacy behaviors for parents!
